Moving camera homework

In this scene at the start when they wake up they all seem very panicked when it zooms into one of the characters faces it emphasises this emotion to the audience so they have a clearer picture of what is going on. This type of movement is giving the voice to the camera as it is saying look at this its important and it is noticeable how the camera moves into the face which makes us pay more attention. These shots are less common than either static or the more “invisible” camera movements which are used, however just as useful to use in a film. The zoom into the face isn’t a usual picture we would see normally in everyday life which is why it stands out it also leaves the same image on the screen a little longer and puts the main focus of the clip in the middle for us to concentrate on whilst watching and shows us what we need to be watching and which are the important parts of the film which creates the story by making us focus on the closest part of the image.

In this scene the majority of the shots are moving however not noticeable unless you are looking out for the movement of the camera, the camera follows the movement of the actors and when they are on the water it gives you the feeling of being on a boat because the camera is following the same movement as the waves which makes you feel like you are more involved in the film. By mimicking the actions of what the characters see and feel with the camera it makes it easier for the audience to feel more for them for example sad if something bad happens or maybe happy for them if something good happens. This kind of shot where the camera slightly moves but not a massive movement is used broadly because it feels more natural to see that kind of movement rather than a static camera watching everything because what we see with our eyes is hardly ever completely still. Because there is this small movement in most shots it doesn’t stand out and so doesn’t point out anything important is happening as it isn’t telling us anything about what is happening but just helping us piece together what is happening throughout the film.

I’m really happy with the content here, Caragh, as you’ve picked two good examples and clearly demonstrated how the camera movements are used to give different effects. Well done for this. Two targets for next time — firstly, research how to take a screenshot on your computer/tablet, as this will really help lift your analysis further — it will give you more detailed and specific shots to consider. Your second target is to start using more punctuation in your work. While the content is good, the sentences are very long, and it feels quite hectic to read! The simplest way to do this is to read it aloud, and include commas wherever you need to pause for breath. That then also gives a mental breathing space for someone reading it!
