The Coward

The aim for this film was to use 2 or more camera rigs for moving camera shots and put them together so that it fitted well. We used the shoulder mount and jib which we thought would be good to get the clips we wanted because they each are used for different types of angles and shots. The shoulder mount was used to show more of a persons point of view so the audience felt like one of the characters as the camera was at eye height which replicates how we see in everyday life. The jib was used for smooth movements panning to show the action, this is not what we see usually when looking at things. Making the camera movement ‘invisible’ means you are using it right and it fits with what you are filming.

When we were editing the film we had a couple things which weren’t quite right and made it harder to make the film have continuity; for example the hats were on in some shots but in others they weren’t wearing them. Also in one or two of the shots our equipment was in the shot which we had to edit out. The last thing we realised whilst editing was the lack of close shots as we only had mid and wide shots. Close shots would have been useful to show expressions and make certain scenes more tense and interesting. They also make the viewer feel more involved as it is a more personal view. We should have also taken more moving camera shots during the chase scene so that we could cut more clips together quicker to make it more interesting to watch and give a faster pace to the video.

For my next video I will reflect on this and remember to do what I didn’t last time. Before going out with the camera I will make sure we have a complete shot list ready that we can follow to make sure we get all the needed shots.

Good, Caragh — at this point I’m genuinely not troubled about the quality of the film so much as what you learned in making it, and it’s clear that you’ve learned a lot in making this one. Well done — the key thing now is carrying your understanding into the next project!
