To film this video we tested out the different camera equipment and filmed clips we thought would work well with the different pieces, Each rig can be used differently and different ones are good for different shots you might want to shoot.
The first rig I’m going to talk about is the Jib, This is a very good piece of equipment to film smooth movements which maybe reveal a big drops perhaps over stairs or a building or focusing one point as the camera gets higher or lower. It is fairly easy to use and can get some fantastic shots out of it.
Next is the Dolly, I think this is good to either do shots where someone is walking so you can follow them or is also good to do a dolly zoom where you zoom the opposite way to the way the camera moves which is an effective shot because it shows something is happening and draws the audience in. It is good at getting a steady movement however isn’t as portable as other rigs.
There is also the slider which has a smooth movement and I think is good to focus on a certain object or reveal something else in the scene by moving it backwards, gain is it easy to use but effective when used for the right shot.
The fig rig- This is good to film shots which could be handheld but it steadies the camera more so it has less jolts for example if running it won’t be as bumpy, It can also be used to move the camera in a circle maybe to show disorientation.
Shoulder mount- The shots filmed with this are good for eye height shots so the audience feel as if they are in the film watching or being one of the characters. I think it is good for conversations or focusing on a particular character.
Glidecam/Steadicam- I didn’t like this piece as much as others however it is still useful for particular shots and with more practise it will be easier to get the hang of. It can be used to film smoother shots so the camera stays in the same sort of position whilst movement is happening.
Handheld is probably the simplest technique nut also can be the best ting to use for some shots because it can make some scenes feel more real if the character is moving and you want the audience to feel like it is them, it will show more of what they would actually see/feel.
The last one is the static tripod which can be used for panning or tilting. This can be used to show something from the same angle without it changing or follow something that is moving by panning. I would say that this tripod is best used for wide shots to show the set.
Good work here Caragh — well done. Try to take a few moments to proofread your writing — there are some random capital letters here and there!
